The Drowning Lovers began in 2009 as a trio (John Gillespie, Edith Snow, Paul Snow) when they created the conceptual album, Chatham Mills—which was recorded (by genius John Plymale) in Chatham Mills of Pittsboro, NC. The idea was that each song would tell a tragic story of a character who’d ended up in an old, dilapidated flop house. Song styles leaned retro-noir, loungey, and embraced stories about revenge, crimes of passion, loss, stalking, and dreams.
In 2016, drummer and percussionist Robert Cantrell joined the group and brought along sax goddess, Lisa Lindsay. After playing a gig with Lisa on New Year’s Eve, buzzing Edith proposed to Lisa and asked her if she’d marry the band. She said YES! Since then, the style has morphed into more of a jazz-pop-noir. They still embrace a swishy vibe but do fall off the rails occasionally... Past Venues include: The Cave, The 506, Arcana, Big Boss Brewing, The Unscripted Hotel Lobby, Coker Hills E.C. Leonard Park, Carrboro Music Festival, Open Eye Cafe, Pittsboro General Store, Oddco, City Tap in Pittsboro, The Wine Bar in CH and Yonder in Hillsborough. We were most recently featured in a silent auction to raise money for Hidden Voices, a social justice arts collective. The highest bidder won us playing at their house for an evening, and so we played their Valentine's party seen here: |
